BIAW Legislative Action Day bears fruit

March 2, 2026

Roughly 100 BIAW members showed up in Olympia to represent the building industry and push for real solutions to Washington's homebuilding crisis. Many wore shirts with the number of days they've been waiting for building permits for projects.

When the average building permit delay is 6.5 months, that is not just red tape. It is a $31,375 holding cost on every new home. And in a state that needs 1 million new homes in the next 20 years, permit delays only make the crisis worse.

In meetings with legislators across the state, BIAW made it clear: If we want affordability, we have to fix the permit process and support home building.

Since Hill Day:
 • SB 5360, the bill creating criminal prosecution opportunities for unknowingly

violating environmental regulations, is dead.
 • HB 2304, improving access to condiminiums as a home ownership choice, passed both chambers.
 • HB 2107, requiring L&I to provide prompt notice of safety violations, passed both chambers.
 • LNI offered amended language moving us to neutral on the bill eliminating guard rails on LNI’s asbestos rules, SB 6188.

This is what happens when our members show up, stay engaged, and speak with one voice.
